If you are trying to jump back into Path of Exile 2 only to get smacked with the dreaded "Failed to Connect to Instance" error right at the login screen, you are definitely not alone. It is a super frustrating loop where the game basically refuses to load your character.

The good news is that this usually isn't a problem with your PC or your internet. Most of the time, it happens because the specific map or zone your character was just in crashed, timed out, or got corrupted on the server side. When you try to log in, the game keeps trying to throw you back into a space that no longer exists, causing the login to fail.

Here is a straightforward guide on how to break that loop and get back to blasting monsters.

Force Spawn Into Town (The Best Fix)
This is the primary fix, and it works for the vast majority of players. Instead of letting the game force you into your broken or expired map instance, you can manually tell it to spawn you safely in a town or your hideout.

Here is exactly how to do it:

Open up the game and go to your character selection screen.

Hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard.

Click the Play button while continuing to hold down Ctrl.

A prompt will pop up asking if you want to log into your most recent town or hideout instead. Accept it.

This bypasses the broken instance entirely and drops your character into a fresh, stable town zone.

Bypass Corrupted Filters and Servers
If the Ctrl-click trick didn't solve it, there are a few other common culprits—like overloaded servers or broken files—that might be blocking your connection. Work your way down this list to clear things up:

Remove Custom Loot Filters: A lot of players have noticed that heavily strained or outdated custom loot filters (like Neversink) can actually trigger instance crashes while your character is trying to load. Go into your UI settings and completely disable or remove any custom filters, then try logging in again.

Swap Your Gateway: Go back to the main login menu and manually switch your server gateway to a different region. For example, if you are on US East, swap to US West. If you are on Frankfurt, try London. This forces your network to route away from what is likely an overloaded local server.

Create a New Instance on Portals: Once you finally manage to log into a town using the fixes above, do not touch your old portals. They are likely tied to the broken instance. Instead, walk over to the waypoint or the area entrance, Ctrl + Click it, and select "New" to spin up a completely fresh, working zone.

Flush Your DNS: Sometimes your computer holds onto bad network routes. Close the game entirely, open your Windows Command Prompt as an administrator, type ipconfig /flushdns, and hit Enter. This clears out your clogged server cache.

Verify Game Integrity: If a local file is corrupted, your game won't be able to build the map layout properly. If you are on Steam, right-click Path of Exile 2 in your library, select Properties, go to the Installed Files tab, and click Verify Integrity of Game Files.
